I bet this is insanely expensive. Their page announcing pricing changes shows what looks like a 5 hour block of non-expiring playtime [1]. They aren't doing $1 or $2 transactions, so my guess is somewhere in the $1 per hour range.

People were worried about GTA6 costing $100 on launch. How about $100 per month if you want to play a couple hours a night and half a day on weekends? That's a lot, but I bet it's not uncommon.

It's the perfect testing scenario for those who want to take away ownership and replace it with forever rentals. They have a super popular game that people are desperate to play, the studio isn't launching it on PC for day 1, and the AI industry has given them an excuse to push console pricing over the moon.

Cynical people would see it as being very, very convenient.

The big tech companies are loving their invented supply crisis because it's price anchoring everyone into thinking that owning a PC or console or doing any type of gaming should cost half your paycheck.

Good for Microsoft though. A lot of people were probably considering a console purchase just for GTA6 and spending a few hundred dollars for a streaming service while waiting for the PC port is going to seem like a "good deal".

Those are just entertainment products, both the game and the streaming service. They can be skipped. In the end, price dictates popularity. If it is cranked too high, it will not sell. There is nothing new here.

The gaming industry competes with free social media and is losing tremendously, so Microsoft's steps actually do not make much sense. I think they will just give up at some point as they cannot create a portfolio of games and services that is profitable enough for them.

In a near future where ai can decompile every game and reskin it I think we may see a whole lot more streaming of games and super thin clients.

From a Kotaku article on the same subject:

Update 10/6/2026 11:42 p.m.: Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball has said that The Verge‘s report from earlier today claiming Xbox had exclusive streaming rights to GTA 6 was “misreporting.”

“We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”

    • donmcronald 7 hours ago ago

      > will not be streaming exclusively

So it’ll be streaming on multiple platforms?

      > or to PC

If it’s streaming, but not to PC, what’s it streaming to?

      • MYEUHD 7 hours ago ago

        > If it’s streaming, but not to PC, what’s it streaming to?

        Xbox consoles probably.

Apparently they're introducing a pay-as-you-go option next month. So instead of paying $80/$100 upfront, you'd pay it (or more!) gradually as you stream the game.

      • Foxhuls 7 hours ago ago

TVs and phones maybe? I’m not sure and it’s definitely a good question. My only guess at this point could be rockstar specifically restricting streaming to PC.

      • rickdeckard 6 hours ago ago

        > or to PC

So consoles only, Fortnite-like-but-paid or are we ready to try the revenue-maximizing "companion phone app" thing again...?

  • glimshe 3 hours ago ago

Maybe I'll take a look at GTA 6 once it's on sale at 50% off. It may take years, but I have a huge library of unplayed games already, and hundreds more go on sale every month. I played GTA 5 for the first time a couple of years ago, and bought it at a massive discount.

It's possible I'll never get to play GTA 6. That's okay too.

What exactly is streaming rights for Xbox?

    - I don't buy the game, I pay a cloud rental fee and can play so long as my membership is active? Unlimited hours?

    - I buy the game, but don't have to use up hard drive space?

    - So long as I have an Xbox streaming account, I could stream on my PC? A tablet?

      >What exactly is streaming rights for Xbox

It means it won't be available on Geforce Now, Netflix, or Amazon Luna

      • expedition32 6 hours ago ago

I recall when you could add your own Steam account to GeForce Play so that you could play your library. That was a good service.

        • WithinReason 40 minutes ago ago

There are still services like that where you basically rent a gaming PC for streaming, like Shadow PC or AirGPU.

        • haunter 4 hours ago ago

That's how actually Geforce Now works. The point with this exclusivity that even if you have GTAVI in your library it won't work there.

I have 3k games on my Steam account and 1/3 of them is supported by Geforce Now

        • sourcecodeplz 4 hours ago ago

you can still add it, thats the main use actually.

          • Good4boothee 3 hours ago ago

Except in some cases, you just can't. Somehow publishers are the ones that decide which games from your Steam library you can launch on PC rented from NVidia.

            • haunter 3 hours ago ago

That's the point of the whole article

"Xbox has secured exclusive GTA 6 streaming rights" not Geforce Now

This game failing would be the funniest thing this year.

  • xvxvx 9 hours ago ago

They started limiting the hours of Xbox game streaming from 5-15 per month depending on tier. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs $22.99 per month and the limit is 15 hours. That will not work for GTA6 which has an estimated 80-300 hours of gameplay.

    • prmoustache 7 hours ago ago

      > That will not work for GTA6 which has an estimated 80-300 hours of gameplay.

This is a limit per month.

I am not sure one could still function socially playing videogames 80h a month. We are reaching addiction/disease level at that point.

      • gambiting 6 hours ago ago

While I'm not defending it, it's "only" about 3-4 hours a day. I know several people who get home and veg for 4 hours straight on tiktok. And yes, it's not good for them either.

(And how many of us lived in homes where the entertainment was just watching TV every night, I'm sure my dad would watch more than 4 hours of TV every day).

Not to mention people who have nothing better to do on the weekend(or you know, they choose to spend their time this way) and play around 16 hours a weekend - even with not playing during the week at all, that alone gets you to 64 hours a month.

      • logicchains 6 hours ago ago

That's ~3 hours per day, far less than the average boomer spends watching TV.

        • prmoustache 2 hours ago ago

Which is also probably an addiction issue too.

Last time I was on a plane I saw a guy who was ̶w̶a̶t̶c̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ listening to a movie while playing a game on his phone. I was a bit gobsmacked. While I can enjoy one of these activities at a time, I don't see how one can find enjoyment mixing both.

    • donmcronald 9 hours ago ago

Wasn't it over a decade ago that the Guitar Hero guy said their goal was to turn every purchase of the game into $500 of sales?

I wouldn't even be a tiny bit surprised if finishing GTA6 via streaming costs you $200-300.

    • asdff 9 hours ago ago

Way more than 80-300 hours. People are still messing around in GTA5 online and the game's been out 13 years. Some people probably have 4-5 figures worth of hours of playtime in that game.

      • mikestorrent 8 hours ago ago

Does that at some point not cross a line from pleasurable escapism into reality avoidance?

        • asdff 7 hours ago ago

Most people's book reading or screen watching numbers probably reach similar totals over years. Is that escapism or avoidance? Depends on the context of the rest of the life of course.

          • brainwad 7 hours ago ago

In the same universe? If you only read/watch stories from one fictional universe that's also weird.

On the other hand I've sunk thousands of hours into sim games and I wouldn't call it reality avoidance.

        • sampullman 7 hours ago ago

Maybe? But then you have to defend every other hobby from the same argument.

        • altmanaltman 7 hours ago ago

How is it reality avoidance? Playing the game is the reality for them and they enjoy it. Who are we to judge how others must live? Unless your position is "if you play over x hours of video games in x years, you are out of touch with reality" but that is still a subjective opinion not a fact.

  • gitowiec 6 hours ago ago

It is possible that before GTA6 we will have GTA6 on a PC, thanks to the latest jailbreak for PS5 and AnyPS5 project ;)

  • mike_d 9 hours ago ago

The article did a great job of scooping sand over the huge turd this actually is.

Microsoft is going to be charging you per hour to play GTA 6.

    • donmcronald 9 hours ago ago

Yep. People need to understand this is the end game for them. Pay per-minute for everything you do.

      • mikestorrent 8 hours ago ago

It's absolutely optional. Why feel any pressure at all to do this? How much FOMO do you really suffer from? There's so much free or abandonware gaming material out there that you could never run out of new things to try without spending a cent... paying per minute is far from mandatory as long as you can still own hardware, and computers are still pretty cheap all things considered.

        • auyez 7 hours ago ago

Also other than abandonware, there is a large market of indie devs

        • altmanaltman 6 hours ago ago

More so, pay per minute is also optional. You can still buy the full game and have it in your library. If you really are such a fan, then the economics don't make sense and you will never stream as opposed to buying the game. This is mostly to catch regular gamers who just might want to check it out.

But gamers are not so stupid they will pay per min and spend thousands of dollars on xbox streaming when you can buy the full game at ~$100.

Nobody is forcing you to stream it per minute. But the comments here make it seem like that's the only way to play.

        • anon109 7 hours ago ago

Good luck finding people to play abandonware with you.

        • Larrikin 7 hours ago ago

It is a concerted effort the older you get to continue to find new music. Most people after a certain age stop organically discovering new music and having a new favorite song. Once you stop finding the new music without the effort, a lot of people seem to slip into the trap of believing that the best songs came out when they were younger and everything else is just not as good. But, I believe they simply stopped looking and became closed off to new experiences. All the new songs are going to be worse if you don't give new songs or genres the chance you used to give new music.

Video games I believe are similar. There are a massive amount of good video games from the past, but that does not mean all of the best or even your favorite one were already created in the past. Same as the "best" song did not come out or was discovered in your twenties.

Another poster also already made the point, but you will also miss out on community. I spent a lot of time on the Dreamcast playing Phantasy Star Online back when it was new. Playing that exact same game on my Dreamcast today is in no way the same experience it would be today.

I absolutely find it disgusting that there seems to be an end goal of trying to remove ownership of games. A lot needs to be done to ensure game preservation continues. But I also really disagree that this transition being forced on people by the greedy is unimportant because you can just play old games.

      • buzer 8 hours ago ago

Why pay per-minute when you can do pay per-hour and partial hours are counted as full hours?

      • peddling-brink 8 hours ago ago

They should make a black mirror episode about that..

        • mrheosuper 7 hours ago ago

There is an episode about implant subscription

I think this is a good idea depending on the price? Almost all games I own I play less then 5 maybe 10 hours

Does not justify investment in hardware or full price buy

  • MBCook 10 hours ago ago

Oh that’s a nice coup for them. They need anything they can get to survive.

How much did MS pay for "exclusive streaming rights?"

    • Hamuko 8 hours ago ago

      My guess is "too much".

      • Good4boothee 3 hours ago ago

MS also paid 1B for Minecraft, and everyone said it was far too much, but somehow, it paid itself back long time ago.

        • Hamuko 3 hours ago ago

Maybe I'll be more optimistic once the ZeniMax and Activision-Blizzard deals pan out.

  • wolvoleo 9 hours ago ago

Does that mean I can play the game without owning an xbox? That would be nice as the pc version will take forever. I could just subscribe for a month or so.

Ps couldn't read TFA as it's paywalled

    • sourcecodeplz 4 hours ago ago

no, from what i understand you still need an xbox to play it, but you dont have to buy it upfront, you can buy it by the hour.

    • danielmeskin 9 hours ago ago

If you think you can finish the game in at most 15 hours then yes subscribing for a month or so will work

      • prmoustache 6 hours ago ago

One doesn't have to finish every game. The point of gaming is first to have a good time doing so.

  • avaer 9 hours ago ago

Taking a step back, it's a little sad that exclusion is considered something the industry celebrates now.

Back in the day Doom was literally the number one PC software and everyone copied it. At no detriment to anyone, considering gaming is now the number one entertainment in the world by revenue.

But modern console games are little morcels chopped up and force fed to customers that have no ownership or choice. MSFT is proudly boasting how little of the game the plebs are "exclusively" allowed to stream.

Kids these days don't know how bad they have it.

    • m4rtink 7 hours ago ago

I think this time due to their greed it will spell their doom. ;-)

    • altmanaltman 6 hours ago ago

Doom operated on a shareware model where they encouraged people to copy the game and share. But they would charge for the next levels if you want to upgrade via mail. These days you can still find a lot of games working on that model except the physical mail part.

However, even recent Doom releases do not follow that model obviously as game distribution has become a solved (some might say too solved) problem.
