Nowadays clothes are cheap enough to be disposable once they become riddled with fungus in the tropics. Since buying a new one is cheap and convenient unlike repairing one and also looks better, no one repairs clothes anymore so sewing machines are now mostly used in factories for mass production of clothing
My son and I volunteer at the local repair cafe. The clothing/textile repair area is usually the busiest area, and I'd say that at least half of the people working the sewing machines are young women of reasonably affluent backgrounds - college-age or younger.
Perhaps people don't need to do it anymore, but many are choosing to.
Lots of people still buy good quality clothing and repair it. Not as many as there used to be, but the market exists. Five of my friends own and use sewing machines for this purpose.

I see. Where I live in central America there are no high quality clothes anymore because they're expensive, so there is nothing to repair.
