Rio is the terminal multiplexer in Plan 9

The confusion with Plan 9 is probably part of the reason this jumped onto the front page.

Besides that name clash, it apparently competes with another terminal emulator that was creatively named "vt100".

Scrolling over the page I did a double take when I saw the benchmark. No way a vt100 can do 221 MiB/s! Who even types that fast anyway?

Very chatty build scripts for one. I remember reading the build instructions for clisp many years ago, and it very explicitly told you to run the build in xterm and not something like gnome-terminal, because xterm was way way faster at getting all the output through.

Well this inspired me. I think I'll make a new shell and call it "bash". It seems bash-shell.com is available.

ed is not the standard editor?

...although I must admit this seems like a good project that is helping lots of developers. Apologies for the knee-jerk reaction.

It's nice to see it running in novel places like the Steam Deck, Windows, and FreeBSD.

Are there any examples of the browser support advertised on the front page?

Naming a terminal emulator "rio" seems like a cruel joke on Rob Pike :)

Kids who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat names we already used.

Before you name something, google for it.

Here in Dublin, Ireland, there’s a store that sells stuff for small kids and their parents called “Baby Doc”. I wonder if someone already told them.

Let's put down the sledgehammer and firehose when attempting specific goals.

You can do a Wikipedia search, trademark searches in your target/home country, domain registrar checks, and search on Google Maps, OSM, Apple Maps.

There are lots of targeted ways to find companies by name.

Now if you find something unused, you may be wise to check UrbanDictionary, KnowYourMeme, and your 12-year-old niece. And eventually, Google will find you.

By the way, naming something good or positive can sometimes have an effect of eclipsing or erasing the prior bad associations. Perhaps in a few generations, children will only remember "Baby Doc" as their favorite store, divorced from geopolitics.

I was only half joking about opening a pub next to it and calling it Papa Doc.

Great, ghost.el was made thanks to the well-made libghostty-vt library. I am very to try out Rio in Emacs next.

What would be the advantage of Rio? Curious, not trying to start an argument.

I thought this was about Plan 9.

Have a app that use swiftterm currently and want to try libghostty but no time

Turned out there are so many choices for the terminal engine

The clear C ABI sound good to me and will try it if time allows

    Great work!

I think it is named Rio cause the author is from Rio de Janeiro state...
