There isn't a lot of equipment that scares me, but eye-permanent-blinding lasers through open air is one of them.
It seems like this device could be made safer by replacing the laser with a loaded gun, because generally, you'll be OK as long as the barrel is pointed away from you. Lasers can effortlessly reflect off of any shiny enough object in their path and still remain dangerous.
