This has been going on for at least fifty years. People make their fortunes in California, go somewhere else, buy a middling house and spend a hundred grand on improvements.
It was a known pattern in my home town. I saw it myself in Portland.
I've been here for 35years and this was the first time our housing cost doubled in 2 years.
