Love the concept and style, think a tutorial or quick demo would be better since the gameplay isn't obvious at all. If that's the point it should be more engaging in the beginning to gear you towards the actions you need to take.
This was a ton of fun to play! I can recommend putting in the effort to figure out the puzzles, none are too difficult and the clues are just enough to get you moving if you get stuck.

If you think you have all the words filled in properly but nothing is happening, hint: base64(VGhlIGNvcnJlY3QgdHJhbnNsYXRpb24gb2YgdGhlIGFsaWVuIHdvcmQgImN2aXF6dnhxIiBpcyBub3QgIm5ld2hhcnQiLg==), and spoiler: base64(SXQncyAiZXZlcnN0cm9uZyIu). I suspect there may be a bug in the game that it uses the wrong message at one point.
If this is the translation minigame, the hints there do really help. (I too was stuck for a bit.) You really do want to pay close attention to the ship types that come back as a response from the encoded messages you send out to the other ship and then fill them into the corresponding blanks accordingly. Don't overthink it (I know I did at first).
I'm at the (very early) point where I identified 2 capital ships and have some info about 2 alien ships but I can't pin down what's not quite right about my info despite half a dozen "small hints." What am I doing wrong here?

About 70% of the way done with the game. This is awesome. Really cool to see an investigation style game like Obra Dinn with such a minimal UI.
