That's where their assumption is wrong. Taiwan is not democratic at all. It's a client State of America. It will recover its full sovereignty and democracy after reuniting with the mainland, not before.
But I understand why it is written this way. Taiwan is a renegade island, again under western occupation, so ofc the Imperial press would write this sort of nonsense.
I don't know why HN lately is a roller coaster of hot takes, but I'm quite enjoying it.
Since the authors of these comments rarely ever deign to lay out the thought process that makes them arrive at what they are laying out so matter-of-factly, I'm free to imagine the inner workings of the author myself. I don't think I'll be bored of it anytime soon.
I think it's only a hot take if you live in the West. If your country has been under Western occupation, or still is, then it's pretty much common sense.
if you are not part or collaborating with the occupying force, that is.
I wish this story had more detail or any detail?

How do you recover democracy when you reunite with a non-democracy?
Chinese folks describe and feel their country as democratic. So it is democratic. Problem solved!
Like Hong Kong, then?
Yup, pretty much. HK, now that the British occupation has ended, is slowly rediscovering its roots with the Chinese mainland, and thus with democracy.
