I visited my cousin in NYC and said I wanted a "real NYC bagel" and he told me to go to H&H to get a bagel then go next door to Zabars to get lox and cream cheese.
Zabars is a huge deli and grocery store. They have refrigerated cases full of deli stuff and the staff behind them packs it for you. They have a case full of nothing but smoked fish but I didn't see any salmon. The guy said it was the next case over. A huge case of nothing but smoked salmon: dozens of different kinds of salmon from different places, different woods, different parts of the fish. I was stunned.
H&H is next door, yet for years Zabars got its in-house bagels from Columbia Bagels on 110th and Bway (sadly now gone). Anyway next time skip H&H and just start and end your trip at Zabars ;)
