In days before antibiotics were common, around my parts the older generation were told by their mothers to rug up and keep warm outside in the cold or rainy days, less they risk catching cold. The same story for any other potentially lethal virus as well while the body starts to mount a defence.
It's disingenuous in this instance to refer to the secondary illness as the primary cause of death. Some people might say the actual cause was some idealism by the child's parents ...
