I saw alpha phoenix video about reversing game of life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8pjrVbdafY which got me thinking about using diffusion model to solve this problem.
I did this proof of concept yesterday, this look promising and interesting as an open research project.
There are probably plenty of ways to improve, and plenty of work to do to investigate the limits.
Feel free to write some papers about it. Not sure if I can sink more time on it myself as it's the kind of problem that won't put food on your table.
