From the outside, without any previous context (and admittedly I didn’t read the whole issue), I feel the maintainer’s pain. So much. You try to explain a well-reasoned policy and are bombarded by rudeness and entitlement. It’s an asymmetric relationship where the maintainer needs to be the civil one at all times or it escalates to outside the project and then they get even more abuse. It’s these types of interactions that make people burn out.

I’ve learned the hard way that sometimes you just have to lock the thread. If you’re reasonable against rudeness some people will apologise—everyone has a bad day—but if it doesn’t happen soon, don’t subject yourself to more of it.

With that in mind, I’m not sure if submitting this to HN is the best idea. It only invites more people to comment which is more stuff to wear down the maintainer. Or it invites people to be doubly rude to the submitter, perpetuating the cycle of hate.

I think this comment summarizes why this is good for HN: to get a bird's eye view of the difficulties of maintainers and contributions from upstanding members of the community.
