Something similar actually happened to me. Somebody called me about a job application I submitted through craigslist/email 6-7 years ago. This was while I was a student. I had to tell the lady that I don't even live in the same area.
A number of years ago I was internally referred to a role at one of the FAANGs. When speaking with the recruiter or hiring manager they seemed pretty confused at why I was even qualified. Eventually I asked them what address was written at the top of the resume they were looking at.
"Ah yes. You seem to have a copy of the resume I entered into your system fresh out of high school."
I applied for ~30 positions at Halliburton over 1.5 years while I was working within the plant for a private contractor.
Then about 2.5 years after the first and I had left... I got them all back at once with a a flood of boiler emails saying "this particular position has been filled at this time, apply again." Someone's queue had grown embarrassingly large and they scrubbed it with a single command.
It got me thinking of some cyber-enhanced future war where dead soldiers go into a queue and after the war is over someone releases the flood of "We regret to inform you" emails all at once. Using the same command probably.
To note: She did not get a reply, it was returned. I was really hoping someone actually replied

Obviously this is nowhere near 48 years.

I've seen companies that would consider this a timely response.
In other news: Florida man hospitalized after hearing back from potential employer on job application.
I upvoted your grey post because it was not wrongthink, someone was just thinking wrong.
If you are in the UK it was a gray post. Oh wait it's the other way round. I was thinking wrong.
