I've been on this site for some time, and I have finally worked out why I don't understand how things work. It's because it's people who are using it.
And people, even hackers[0], are weird, illogical, random, and unpredictable.
[0] Perhaps especially hackers.
I see that the story (though not this source) has been submitted before, but there doesn't seem to have been much discussion, so I thought it worth resubmitting, rather than point at other, effectively dead submissions.
